Coldplay Beats Madonna to No.5 Highest Grossing Tour of All Time

28th July 2017 | Category: Concerts

According to ticket sales data reported by Billboard Boxscore, Coldplay is now No.5 at the Highest Grossing Tour of All Time with its ongoing “A Head Full of Dreams Tour” for which the tickets can be purchased here.

The British alternative rock band surpassed Madonna’s “Sticky and Sweet Tour” which earned $408 million in 2008 and 2009. Coldplay claimed the fifth place by grossing a whopping $412 million to date.

“A Head Full of Dreams Tour” is the seventh tour by Coldplay, launched in support of their seventh studio album by the same name. The band returned to large venues after their last intimate tour ”Ghost Stories Tour”, visiting stadiums and arenas across five continents with a total of 120 concerts scheduled.

The tour consists of eight legs and the first one was across Latin America and started on March 31, 2016 at the Estadio Ciudad de La Plata in La Plata, Argentina. The first European leg followed beginning May 24 through the first week of July. The third leg was through America from July 16 to early September, 2016. A leg across Oceania was in December 2016 and across Asian venues in April 2017. The second European leg included 20 sold out performances at 13 stadiums. A total of 1,194,236 tickets were bought since June 6, 2017 in Munich until final tree-night-stint in Paris on July 15, 16 and 18. The tour earned $104.9 million of its total $412 million sum from its 2017 European leg.

The total winner of 2017 dates is the one at the national stadium of France which racked up sales of $19.8 million. This three-show run in Paris is the highest-grossing concert engagement of 2017 based on Boxscores. Although the Paris sales total is the biggest of 2017 not only for Coldplay but for any other artist, it still isn’t this tour’s top gross. That record belongs to four concerts at London’s Wembley Stadium during last summer’s first European leg with $28.8 million from almost 304,000 sold tickets.

The tour is currently on a break until August 1 when it will pick up at the Met Life Stadium in East Rutherford, N.J. The tickets for all venues from August 1 till October 8 can be purchased here. This tour will end the same place where it started, Estadio Ciudad de La Plata on November 15.

No.1 on the all-time highest grossing tour remains U2’s “360 Tour” that lasted from 2009 till 2011 with a massive $736.42 million. Second place with impressive $558.25 million belongs to Rolling Stones with their 2005-2007 “A Bigger Bang Tour”.  No.3 belongs to a Pink Floyd frontman, Roger Waters and 2010-2013 “The Wall Live Tour” with $458.67 grossed while AC/DC holds the fourth place with their 2008-2010 “Black Ice Tour” and $ 441.12 million earned.
