Come From Away Is the Favorite Broadway Show in 2017

20th December 2017 | Category: Concerts

With the end of the year approaching fast and party and present frenzy at our door, Broadway fans looked back at the best 2017 had to offer and voted for their favorite Broadway productions. Musicals ruled this year but Come From Away broke the record. Don’t miss this catharsis celebration of humankind and purchase your tickets here.

Newsweek praised the show saying this musical does what all best musicals do, taking you to a place you never want to leave.

The obvious inspiration for the story is tragic events of September 11, 2001, but the true story is a tale of generosity and kindness that stayed under the radar for years. The story is set in the week after the bombing of Twin Towers of World Trade Center when 38 planes were ordered to land unexpectedly in the small town of Gander, the nearest sizable airport on the continent, as part of Operation Yellow Ribbon.

Gander was a military post during World War II and for years was used as a refueling point for transatlantic aircrafts. The detour nearly doubled its population of 9,650 residents but they managed to host and comfort them until they were able to get back home. The characters in the musical are based on real Gander residents and some of 7,000 stranded travelers they housed and fed.

Irene Sankoff and David Hein chatted with people and turned their interviews into a poignant and emotional piece of theatre.

Small cast of actors, playing multiple roles in composite sketches won the affection of audience. Critics sang their praises and celebrity visitors flocked to the theatre to see it. Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, first daughter Ivanka Trump and UN ambassador Nikki Haley are just some of the big names that witnessed this spectacular show of human kindness und unselfishness.

That’s why the show won 5 outer critics circle awards, three Drama Desk Aawards, one Tony Award and we’ll have to wait until January 28, 2018 for the 60th Annual Grammy Awards ceremony to count the Grammy Awards.

It is the biggest and best surprise of the theatre season, and everyone should watch  this remarkable true story of the small town that welcomed the world. It represents the best we can be so don’t miss it!
