Italians are known for their passion. It is undeniable that they are very passionate people in every aspect of their culture and also expression as a culture. Regardless of the medium; food, architecture, heritage, land or sport, their connections with the country run so deep that they have truly earned the right to call Italy home. They have made it their own, generating a unique essence that is felt by anyone who visits. One of the strong connections Italians have with their heritage is their love of sport. Sports have been a part of the history of the country for as long as they can remember, spanning to the times of the Roman Empire and the coliseums, used to appease fans in their lust for skill and ability and also blood. The same can be said for modern sports, minus the loss of appendages. One such sport that garners favour in the country is Football, more specifically, The Italian Serie A.

The Serie A TIM (due to a sponsorship by Telecom Italia), the Italian First Division is a professional football league competition that operates with Italian football clubs at the highest level in the country. The league has been operating for over 80 years since the creation of the league in 1929, purely as Serie A. The name in English simply means Series A, representing the highest league level. Between 1898 and 1922, the competition was not a formative league but an organisation of regional groups. The initial system saw the north and south of the country split into regional leagues, but this setting was abandoned in 1926 due to internal crisis. The settings were changed to add southern teams to the national division, which formed the creation of the final settlement we see today.

The Serie A Championship title, also known as the scudetto is an important aspect of the league and proof of supremacy within Italian Football. The name scudetto comes from the small shield which is worn by the seasonal winning team as a small coat of arms with the Italian tricolour (green, white and red stripe) that is worn the proceeding season. Changes in the modern game have also seen the awarding of trophies to the winning team since 2004, where previously it was co-signed to the winning club at the head office of the Lega Nazionale Progessionisti after several weeks from the win. This change allowed for players and fans to enjoy the delights of the final game with the showing and carrying of a tangible trophy onto the pitch!

AC Milan, Inter Milan, Roma and Juventus are just a small selection of the remarkable teams in the league. It is undeniable that these Italian powerhouses are the strongest competitors in world football today. Almost all of the teams that have graced the first division of Italian football are known throughout the world for the ability they bring to the centre stage. Even more so, the calibre of players is phenomenal, with the likes of Zlatan Ibrahimovic, Giorgio Chiellini, Daniele De Rossi and Wesley Sneijder are but a small portion of the fame that adorns the league; there are just too many to mention!
