The US Open Tennis 2012

25th July 2012 | Category: Sports

Another sporting event that everyone’s watching out for this summer is the US Open Championship for Tennis. This hard court tennis tournament is one of the oldest tennis championships dating back to 1881. Now, it is the fourth and the final major tennis tournament each year following the Australian Open, French Open and Wimbledon. This two-week sports event will feature five championships: men’s and women’s singles, men’s and women’s doubles and mixed doubles.

This year, USTA has announced that five-time US Open singles champion and currently No. 1 tennis player Roger Federer, US Champion Novak Djokovic and 2012 French Open Champion Rafael Nadal will be leading the men’s singles championships. They will be joined by other former US Open Champions Andy Roddick and Juan Martin Del Potro.

The 2012 US Open Tennis Championships will kick-off on August 27th at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in Flushing Meadows, New York. There will also be events preceding the official kick-off on the 27th. The two-week period will end on September 9th. Champions from both men’s and women’s singles will earn $1.9 million. An additional $1 million bonus prize money will add to their winnings based on performances in the Emirates Airline US Open Series.

It was this year that Roger Federer has won the title of the world’s No. 1 player after winning Wimbledon a few months ago. He has even surpassed former champion, Pete Sampras who had set the record for the most number of weeks at the No. 1 spot. This year could be Federer’s sixth US Open title which could surpass another record made by Sampras for the most number of US Open singles titles. He has also been the only male who had won the Emirates Airline US Open Series and US Open titles in the same year.

Being the highest attended annual sporting event, millions of people across the world are expected to be glued to their televisions sets to watch the games. Fans can also catch the action when it happens on the court itself. They can book cheaper US Open 2012 tickets ahead of time, while they can still catch ticket packages that will give them an official pass to all events at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center.
