Cats to Hit the Big Screen in 2019
Cats is one of those iconic musicals that never come down of neither pedestal nor repertoire and for all the fans we have some pretty exciting news. This epic musical will see its film adaptation at the end of 2019 and the cast will simply blow your minds. The upcoming cinematic adaptation of the musical Cats has landed an incredible cast and Idris Elba is the latest member. Emmy nominee, Idris Elba will play Macavity and join Jennifer Hudson, James Corden and Taylor Swift on the big screen. Elba earned Emmy nominations for The Big C and Luther and Golden Globe nomination for Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom and Beasts of No Nation. He also appeared off-Broadway in the 2001 production of Shakespeare’s Troilus and Cressida.
Jennifer Hudson will play Grizabella, a former “glamour cat” who loses everything and sings the classic trach “Memory”. Pop star Taylor Swift, an actor and late-night host James Corden and Ian McKellen will also star in the movie but their roles are kept in private. Lee Hall wrote the script and Tom Hooper, an Oscar-winner for the King’s Speech is helming the movie. The Royal Ballet’s resident choreographer, Wayne McGregor, will be the choreographerand Steven Spielberg the executive producer of the film. All these huge names promise the movie will become a smash hit and until we count down to the release date on 20 December, 2019, make sure you watch the spectacular musical. Lloyd Webber’s musical is based on the T.S. Eliot’s Old Possum’s Book of Practical Cats, a collection of poems about the secret world of Jellicle cats. The musical was first performed in 1981 on London’s West End and then transferred to Broadway in 1982. The story is about the tribe of cats, called Jellicles, and the night they make “Jellicle choice”, a decision which cat will ascend to the Heaviside Layer and come back to a new life. This amazing show has been translated to 20 languages and has grossed more than $340 million. The show won numerous awards including the Laurence Olivier Award and the Tony Award for Best Musical.
