Rough Times for Broadway
The current financial crisis has now also started to affect Broadway. According to New York Post, three popular shows, Hairspray, Monty Python’s Spamalot and Spring Awakening are prematurely closing down in the next few months.
13 – The Musical, A Tale of Two Cities and Boeing-Boeing are other productions that are in the hot zone and might also face early shutdowns.
Predictions are that the spring theater season will be thin, and that future Broadway shows might have trouble getting funding.
“We are in a very, very serious situation. We have lost the New York audience and have become dependent on foreign tourists. But their currencies are weakening and their economies are in very bad shape. That is going to affect us. The Broadway League needs to start planning for a troubled future. And that may mean meetings with unions to discuss the costs of this industry, which are out of control,” said theater producer James B. Freydberg.
If you ever were thinking of catching any of the above shows on Broadway, now might be a good time, before it’s too late.
