Summer: The Donna Summer Musical Begins On Broadway
The musical tribute to one of greatest voices of a generation, Summer: The Donna Summer Musical, is finally here. The previews have started at the Lunt-Fontanne Theatre and the jukebox tuner is scheduled to officially open on 23 April so hurry up and buy your tickets on time.
The musical made its premier in November 2017 at La Jolla Playhouse and is expected to open on Broadway on 23 April. The musical portrays the life of a girl from Boston with a voice from heaven and her rise from a gospel choir to a dance floor diva.
The world will see how Donna risked it all to break through all obstacles to become an icon of an era. The musical is told through the dramatic lens of her final concert and is filled with the complexity and conflicts the star faced during her meteoric rise and descent. The musical features more than 20 Donna’s hits like “Hot Stuff”, “Bad Girls” and “Love to Love You, Baby”. She was the first artist ever to have five consecutive albums reach number one on the Billboard 200 chart. Donna earned five Grammy Awards and has been declared the undisputed queen of the 70s disco boom.
The cast is led by a Tony winner LaChanze, who took on a role of “Diva Donna”. Ariana DeBose became “Disco Donna” while Storm Lever appears as “Duckling Donna”. LaChanze won the Tony Award for Best Actress in 2006 for “Color Purple”. Ariana DeBose stared in Hamilton and A Bronx Tale directed by Robert De Niro and Jerry Zaks, while Storm Lever appeared in Freaky Friday based on the Disney film.
Great names have gathered together to pay the tribute to such great diva. Summer: The Donna Summer Musical is a musical book by Colman Domingo, Robert Cary and Des McAnuff.
Donna Summer, Giorgio Moroder and Paul Jabara have worked on the music and lyrics while Sergio Trujollo worked on choreography. Scenic design is by Robert Brill, costumes by Paul Tazewell and lighting design by Howell Binkley.
